Published Case #1: A Demon’s Passing Interest

The following is a case I was involved with 3 years ago. This is not fan-fiction. I work free-lance, investigating the unknown and have done so for 6 years. This event involved a teenager and a mother who came to me for help with some very normal, mundane, problems but I got far more than I bargained for.

3 YEARS AGO:

I had been contacted by a woman name Holly concerning her teenage daughter, Susan. As a mother, Holly had been noticing a change in her daughter over a 2 month period. Susan had become more and more withdrawn from her family and some of her close friends. She instead had begun to hang out with a new group of teens her age which Holly knew little about and hadn’t met. Holly initially contacted me about some items she found in Susan’s room and wanted a an explanation of what they were and what relevance they might have to her daughter’s changed behavior.

EVENTS:

I agreed to meet with Holly at her home while Susan was at school. Holly was a single mother raising 5 kids in a small town in Southern Indiana. She was not overly religious, had no denominational ties, didn’t attend church, and had no deep beliefs concerning any deity. No prescription medications and not currently treated for any psychological problems.

The intention of my visit was merely consultation. Holly suspected some occult meaning to items found in Susan’s room and just wanted to know what they were. Susan had a Ouija board, sets of specially made candles with symbols of both Gressil and Astaroth, and a lot of teenage level curiosities (pentagrams adorned a few things and had been drawn quite a bit by the girl amongst other things). Nothing suggestive of any deep involvement and really what you would expect to find in the room of a teenager who was curious but had no real guidance or real sources in the matter. I told the mother that most teenagers get curious about the occult or an earth religion at one point or another and there wasn’t much worrying to be done.

This didn’t lessen Holly’s fear though and asked about Susan’s withdrawal from family life and her taking up with a new group of friends. Again I let her know this was all pretty typical teenage fare and she should perhaps try opening up better communications with her daughter (be there to talk, be understanding) and just let Susan know she was loved and could talk with her mother about anything. Holly took this quite well and understood what I was asking of her. She felt better and I left. I figured that was it for my involvement with them and it was just a case of an over worried mother and very common teenage angst and curiosity.

Two days later though I received a call very late a night from Holly. She was quite upset and said she was at home with her daughter currently and that Susan was nearly hysterical, cowering on the couch and refusing to let anyone turn off any of the lights in the house, scared of something she wouldn’t explain to Holly. Holly had sent the rest of her kids to a family friend’s home and asked if I could come over immediately. She insisted upon me when I suggested perhaps a guidance counselor or someone of that nature would be better suited, as I still believed this was just common teenager stuff. Feeling sympathy for the mother but also irritation because counseling teenagers wasn’t what I did I decided to take the hour trip and let her know I would be there around 1am.

I arrived to find the situation unchanged from the time of our phone conversation. Holly was with Susan on the living room couch and Susan was crying and upset. I asked Holly to go into the other room so that I could speak with Susan. I explained to Susan that I was an investigator into the occult, the unexplained, and that she could tell me what she was afraid of and I would understand and had an understanding of the nature of those things. Susan calmed somewhat at this and asked if demons were “really real and can hurt me?” I explained that there was a much larger world than that which we could all see and indeed there were entities of inhuman nature but stressed that a mild teenage fascination with witchcraft items and playing with a Ouija board was very low-level stuff and that anything of any great power would have little interest in a 16 year old playing with some friends.

Susan insisted though that that night she and a group of friends has succeeded in contacting something other worldly and that it’s intentions toward her were malicious. She explained they had tried some of the chants and rituals obtained off the internet trying to contact a demonic power. She couldn’t tell me with clarity which particular entity the chants were for. I told her a lot of what a teenager had access to, even through the internet, wasn’t high caliber material and honestly most of it was crap. I had also wanted to explain more to her but we were interrupted.

Susan’s car was parked out front of the house and the horn started blaring. Susan jumped and began to cry again. I went to the window and the blaring stopped and there wasn’t anyone out by the car. As I stood at the window though another moment the horn started up again, this time with the lights of the car flashing on an off. I looked back to Susan and firmly told her to stay calm and tell me where her car keys were. To my surprise she handed them to me and indicated with the buttons on her key chain that the car was locked. I check and found that there was no panic button on the key chain and she let me know her car had no alarm system, just automatic locks which were locked and had been since she had come home (this was confirmed upon later inspection, the car was indeed locked the whole time, ruling out someone pranking and scaring her).

I returned to the couch, now alarmed and not so skeptical, and asked Susan more firmly just what she had done earlier in the evening. By now Holly had returned, alarmed by the car horn but stood still and quiet after I motioned for her to do so. Susan explained they had started by successfully levitating a friend about 2 feet off the ground using chants and afterward had sacrificed a stray dog on a makeshift alter one of the other teens had prepared earlier in the day (all the while the car horn and lights are unceasing). The teens drank the dog’s blood, all except Susan who had refused after being sickened by the sight of the dead dog. That is when she left her friend’s house (they had been in the basement) against the wishes of the other teens, and had been warned to stay and complete the rituals they had planned on. When I had arrived earlier, Susan explained, she was upset and scared that she should have stayed and feared the consequences of leaving early.

Holly left us then and returned with a small pocket new testament she kept around, I asked for it and told Susan to read to herself those passages I indicated and asked if she believed anything along the lines of Christianity. Susan had as a child but hadn’t explored anything of the sort for some time. I told her that I had found that a demon’s power was limited by the will of the individual. Stronger willed people, whether religious or not, were harder to control and manipulate because their spirits were inherently more stubborn. I told her to read Ecclesiastes and be strong about herself and her desire to have nothing more to do with what was happening and had happened earlier. She assured me she really did want nothing more to do with it and I asked her and her mother to sit together while I went outside.

This particular home had an entry hallway. A small room separated the house’s main front door from another wooden outer door. No windows in the small entry way. I stepped through the first door closing it behind me and stood before the outside door listening to the car. I reached for the handle as the car horn stopped, this caused me to pause with my hand on the still closed door. It was then a very loud knock came at the same door. 4 knocks, very regular and evenly spaced. I opened the door and as suspected there was nothing there. What surprised me though as I stood there was the second set of knocks, from the inner door. 4 knocks again, very loud as I stood in the small room still. No temperature drop or phantom breeze, just a loud pounding on the inner door, enough to cause dust to be disturbed from the frame and the door to very noticeable vibrate with each knock before my eyes. I yelled to Susan and Holly inside NOT to open it and that it wasn’t me. I had let go of the outer door now and stood squarely in the middle of the small entry room. When the knocking ceased, I stood quite still and near a minute of stillness followed before I felt very strongly something brush past me and I saw the outer door close and latch on it’s own against gravity (the angle of the door frame causes it to swing outward when unlatched). I kept still unsure of myself to open the inner door unless certain I was alone. Another 2 minutes and I did return the the living room.

After closing the inner door and checking on Holly and Susan, who sat very scared on the couch but still doing as I had asked a loud crash came from the adjoining kitchen. Both looked to me and I indicated for them to remain seated as I walked into the kitchen. I found several pots and pans upon the floor and looked up towards the sink which sat under and open window, at which time a drinking glass (plastic and textured, similar to those in buffet restaurants) full of water lifted itself off of the counter, poured its contents down the sink, and reset itself back on the counter. This was the last instance of anything supernormal that night.

Holly, Susan, and I sat in the living room and I tried as best I could to comfort them and assure them of their safety while discussing all that had happened until sunrise (I’d like to note time of day doesn’t matter for this sort of event, but it does have a bearing on people’s minds, daylight bringing most folks some assurance and reduced fear).

CONCLUSIONS:

Later examination found no faults in the wiring of Susan’s car, with either door, or with the self-rising drinking glass. No physical evidence was found on any object or surface which would indicate what caused the events. No further events have been reported to me by either Holly or Susan, whom I have had intermittent contact with since this occurred. Susan plans on marrying this Spring and is expecting, no worse for the wear from these events.

I spoke with the neighbors living closest to Holly’s home and the only conversation of note was with the old couple across the street, who were awakened that night by the car horn. I have not spoken with Susan’s other friends who attended the basement meeting that night. Not from a lack of trying, mind you, but none of them will speak with me.

From start (my arrival) to finish (the drinking glass) the time frame for these events is about 2 hours. I have recorded what happened to the best of my ability and ask no one to believe me nor do I promote an specific beliefs or ideas to anyone, I am just relaying the facts of an experience I have had among others while investigating the nature of the unknown. I do this work free-lance and have no affiliations with any society. Names have been changed only, everything else is as witnessed. This is not fan-fiction.

I’ve concluded for my own purposes that the events of this night centered around Susan. Her curiosity and that of her friends lead them, possibly quite accidentally, to arouse the interest of some non-corporeal life form who for it’s own reasons decided to allow awareness of its existence to others.

I’d like to note that, 3 nights following this event I personally experienced vivid nightmares about Holly’s home. The viewpoint is of outside the home looking at it from across the street. A large black dog runs along the front outside wall of the home from the ground to the roof peak (a-frame house) before vanishing. As this is a dream though, there is no substantiating evidence to believe it has anything to do with the event and is only mentioned here at the end in passing.
