A Viewer’s Review of Underworld: Evolution

Posted by Traci on January 30, 2006 in Cinema, Reviews |

Underworld: Evolution had me completely visually enthralled from the first bloodthirsty action packed moment.

The strikingly beautiful Kate Beckinsale continues her role as Selene, the vampiric death dealer who is on the run from former friends after killing head vampire Viktor (Bill Nighy) in the first installment. Selene, accompanied by the hybrid vampire/lychan Michael (Scott Speedman), discovers the first vampire Marcus (Tony Curran) has awakened and is on the hunt to find his brother, William (Brian Steele) the first werewolf, who had been entombed by Viktor centuries earlier because of his indiscriminate killing sprees. Encompassing flashbacks of the previous installment and new storyline of the past between Viktor, Marcus, William and Amelia (Zita Gorog) it weaves a storyline that not only satisfies but also makes you wonder what’s coming up for the third course. The supporting appearances of Tanis (Steven Mackintosh), the vampire historian, Corvinus (Sir Derek Jacobi) the father of Marcus and William, as well as Selene’s memories of her own childhood only give the tapestry of this series of stories more depth and allure.

The negatives? Maybe there was a couple. A gratuitous sex scene between Selene and Michael that went about a minute and a half too long really was too normal. I would have rather seen more fangs in the throat action. Another negative was that we saw the emotion Marcus had for his brother but we didn’t really get the reason he wanted his brother set free. Death wish? World domination? I guess we’ll just never know.

All in all this entire movie was a worthy second installment. I would buy the DVD in a heartbeat and can’t wait for the promising third movie in a series that has yet to disappoint.

3 out of 4 stars.
