Yale Student’s Murder Eerily Familiar

Posted by Spider on September 15, 2009 in General News |

Before I get into this I want to make it clear that I am in no way being sarcastic, doing a satire piece, or demeaning what happened to the poor woman who ended up murdered. This is just something that hit me that I wanted to elaborate on.

A week ago Annie Le disappeared from Yale, shortly before she was to be married. Everyone was hoping she would be found alive, but after details came out that she never left the labs she visited that day hopes turned sour.

Yet something odd struck me, and I seriously hope I am wrong. There is a chance I am just seeing things that are coincidence, much like those who see number patterns that “predict” events.

Annie Le was found stuffed in a wall, which is no way for any person to go, and the murderer has not been found as of this writing. What struck me is the way her body was found as well as her name. Bear with me as I work through this.

Annie Le = Annabel Lee.

Annabel Lee was a character and title of a poem by Edgar Allen Poe. The poem itself talks of the death of Annabel Lee “in a kingdom by the sea”, and her burial in a “sepulchre”.

For those not knowing what a sepulchre is, here is the Dictionary definition:

sepulchre, or sepulcher, is a type of tomb or burial chamber. In ancient Hebrew practice, sepulchres were often carved into the rock of a hillside.

The word is sometimes confused with “sepulture”, the act of burying a dead person.

The “kingdom by the sea” portion is quite interesting as well. Since Annie Le was not buried in the rock of a hillside, how would this tie in? The “kingdom by the sea” is Yale itself. Yale is right close to New Haven Harbor in Connecticut. A harbor would suffice in this day and age for a sea, and Yale is known as being quite a prestigious university, and would suffice as a kingdom.

What of the rest of the text from Annabel Lee? The poem itself is written from the viewpoint of a lover, or of one in love, with Annabel Lee.

The angels, not half so happy in heaven,
Went envying her and me-
Yes!- that was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.

I am not saying, at all, that Annie Le was cheating on her husband to be. What I am saying is that perhaps the man or woman who killed her was indeed “in love”, or obsessed, with Annie Le. That person also happens to be a Poe fan to a seriously disturbing degree.

The Cask of Amontillado is a short story by Poe as well. It deals with revenge for perceived “multiple insults” against the protagonist. The protagonist invites his “friend” over for a rare wine, and proceeds to chain him in a niche then walling him up and burying him alive, all while enjoying the sounds of the “friend” crying for help.

Sound a little too familiar? If this crime was perpetrated by someone who was “in love” with Annie Le, and she rebuked that person’s advances, that could be taken as “multiple insults”. Since the actual crime took place days before Annie Le was to be married to a perceived rival the murderer could have invited her to the labs she knew all too well under the context of discussing and forgiving past transgressions.

However, with the person already being mentally unbalanced, their perception of a love that is or should be would not end but with the death of Annie Le.

For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling- my darling- my life and my bride,
In the sepulchre there by the sea,
In her tomb by the sounding sea.

Annie Le was last seen around 10am the day she was murdered. “And the stars never rise” would signify the time of her murder, if the above conjecture is true.

Once again, I seriously hope I am wrong and am just seeing things where they are not. Again, I am not trivializing the events that happened. The poor girl was murdered by a sick person, and that part is fact.

I just seriously hope I am wrong.
