Long awaited Silent Hill remake coming soon?

According to sources and rumors on the web, it would appear so.

IGN has the goods again.

Climax is reportedly working on a Wii and PSP revision of the game. There is also talk of an Xbox360 and PS3 game being worked on by Climax but nothing tying it to Silent Hill. If it ends up being a remake of the classic game this is all the better.

This is something that fans of Silent Hill have been waiting for for a long time. A true remake of the game. The only thing that could go wrong would be if they changed too much around. Yes, new voice acting and a more thought out story would be included, you can bet on that. Is it a problem? Not really. While the original is a classic there were problems, and the gameplay has not aged too well.

The graphics are quite aged, the control scheme is no longer intuitive, and playback on the PS3 is just horrid. Monotone sounds coming after firing a gun. (More on this in an open letter to Sony coming soon). A remake is wanted for many reasons by the fans. We want updated graphics to be able to expose our friends and family to this wonder of a game. We want better voice acting and a more thought out narrative so that holes will be filled in.

What would be nice is if Konami authorizes Climax to remake the game and put it out on disc. With the PS3 and Blu-ray (and even DVD on Wii and Xbox360) Climax could fit the remake on the disc as well as have a fixed version of the original included. With the love of retro gaming at peak right now (Nintendo just brought Commodore64 games to the Virtual Console) this would be added incentive to purchase the game, especially for the die hards.
